Prisoners’ Union joins the Supervisory Board of the Prison System
The Supervisory Board of the Prison System, set up by the Ministry of Justice, held its first meeting. The Prisoners’ Union is among its members.
In March 2025 the Supervisory Board of the Prison System, established by Lithuania’s Ministry of Justice, held its first meeting.
The Board is composed of representatives of state institutions (the Ministry of Justice, the Prison Service, the Seimas Ombudspersons’ Office), human rights experts, academia and civil society – including the Prisoners’ Union Association. It reports to the Ministry of Justice and makes recommendations on improving the prison system.
On the Board’s agenda
- improving the internal rules of prisons;
- strengthening probation and parole;
- increasing employment opportunities for prisoners;
- evaluating and improving the reintegration model.
On the Board we will represent the interests of prisoners and their families and bring in the experience of our community.
The Board’s creation was also reported by the European Prison Litigation Network (EPLN).
